The Pitman Garden developed in the Spring of 2011 as one of four pilot edible garden sites provided by Campus Facilities and Sustainability is located outside of the Ryerson University’s student residences Pitman Hall (160 Mutual Street). The Pitman Garden has evolved from planting with Ikea bags and concrete planters to utilizing food grade steel drum to demonstrate the ability of develop an urban edible garden without in-ground space. To construct the planters in this garden, steel drum barrels were cut in half where sharp edges were covered utilizing old biked tires. The planters were then placed on stands constructed utilizing 2 by 4’s that would allow access to the plants at waist level. This garden flourishes with tomatoes, eggplants, peppers and squashes to take advantage sunny conditions. In addition, several self-watering containers with beans cascading up the pergola located behind the Pitman Gardens.
